The three C’s of spill management are Control, Contain, and Clean up. Controlling the source safely with PPE is always the first step. Hosing it down spreads contamination, applying absorbent before PPE is unsafe, and the EPA is only notified after the immediate hazard is stabilized if it meets reportable quantities.

Mud tubes and soft-bodied insects without frass indicate subterranean termites, which require a soil treatment (trench-and-rod) or baiting system to intercept the colony. Whole-structure fumigation is for drywood termites, borate treatments alone won’t stop soil-borne colonies, and aerosols in tubes will only kill a few workers without addressing the source colony.

FIFRA explicitly prohibits applying pesticides at a rate higher than the label permits, as this poses safety and environmental risks. Applying for an unlisted pest (if the site is approved), mixing with fertilizer (unless prohibited), and applying at a lower rate are generally allowed under FIFRA Section 2(ee) exemptions.

In IPM, thorough inspection and identification of harborage areas is always the first step before any treatment is applied. Foggers often scatter bed bugs, making inspection critical; broad pyrethroid applications may fail due to resistance, and whole-building heat treatment is premature without assessing the scope of the infestation.

Norway rats are highly neophobic (fearful of new things), which delays their acceptance of new bait stations or traps. They are burrowers (unlike roof rats), require a daily water source, and have a larger home range (often 100+ feet) compared to house mice.

German cockroaches are known to develop behavioral aversion to specific food matrices (like glucose) used in baits. Switching to a bait with a completely different food matrix is the standard IPM response. Gel baits are highly effective in commercial settings, diluting them is off-label, and temperature is rarely the primary reason for total bait avoidance if fresh.

The target rate is 1 gallon (128 oz) per 1000 sq ft, which means 64 oz is needed for 500 sq ft. Since the sprayer delivers 32 oz per minute, it will take 2 minutes to output the required 64 oz. The other options represent incorrect mathematical calculations.

Flea populations consist mostly of eggs, larvae, and pupae in the environment. An adulticide provides immediate relief by killing adult fleas, while an IGR breaks the life cycle by preventing larvae from becoming adults. Space sprays do not penetrate carpets well, repellents scatter the infestation, and systemic neonicotinoids are for plant/agricultural use.

Pharaoh ants are notorious for ‘budding’ (splitting into multiple new colonies) when stressed by repellent insecticides, flushing agents, or dusts. Slow-acting baits are the only reliable method because workers carry the bait back to feed and kill the hidden queens without triggering a budding response.

Wing venation is a primary diagnostic tool; drywood termite alates have three or more heavily sclerotized veins on the anterior margin of the wing, whereas subterranean termites have two. Both have broad waists (distinguishing them from ants), and swarming seasons or colors vary widely by specific species and geography.

Sulfuryl fluoride can penetrate plastic packaging, so any consumables not in airtight glass or metal (with intact factory seals) must be removed or double-bagged in specific gas-resistant bags. Unopened cans and wine are safe; mattresses and furniture do not retain the gas after aeration, and while plants will die from the gas, they do not become ‘toxic to touch.’

Leather and cotton are highly absorbent materials that will soak up liquid pesticides and hold them against the skin, greatly increasing dermal exposure and toxicity. Nitrile, butyl, and neoprene are non-absorbent, chemical-resistant materials recommended for handling pesticides.

House mice can squeeze through openings as small as 1/4 inch (roughly the diameter of a pencil). Therefore, all gaps 1/4 inch or larger must be sealed with materials like steel wool, hardware cloth, or metal flashing. A 1/2 inch gap is the standard for rats, not mice, and expanding foam is easily chewed through.

Synergists like PBO are not highly toxic on their own but work by blocking the enzymes insects use to break down the primary insecticide (pyrethrins). This makes the insecticide much more effective. Synergists do not provide long-term residual action, act as attractants, or function as surfactants.

Brown Recluse spiders prefer dark, undisturbed areas and often harbor in cardboard (which mimics dead bark). Switching to plastic bins and reducing clutter eliminates their preferred habitats. They are not deterred by high humidity, are negatively phototactic (avoid light), and sealing weep holes can cause severe moisture issues in a structure.

Pyrethroids are highly toxic to aquatic life. Applying them to impervious surfaces like driveways increases the risk of runoff into storm drains and waterways during rain or irrigation. Operators are required to sweep granules off hard surfaces and restrict liquid applications to foundation walls and soil/landscaping to prevent water contamination.

Lyctid powderpost beetles attack hardwoods and leave small, round exit holes accompanied by extremely fine, talc-like frass. Old house borers attack softwoods and leave larger, oval holes; carpenter ants leave coarse sawdust (not talc-like) and do not consume the wood; drywood termites produce hard, six-sided fecal pellets.

The label is the law. Applying a pesticide to an unlisted site—especially food crops—is a serious violation of FIFRA and poses severe health risks. Diluting the product or imposing an arbitrary pre-harvest interval does not make the application legal.

Anticoagulants work by blocking the Vitamin K cycle, which is essential for producing blood-clotting factors, resulting in delayed death by internal bleeding. Overstimulating the nervous system describes neurotoxins like bromethalin; producing phosphine gas describes zinc phosphide; and calcium accumulation describes cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3).

Drain flies breed in the organic biofilm that coats the inside of plumbing. Bleach runs over this film without destroying it. The only effective long-term solution is physically removing the breeding site using a brush and enzymatic cleaners. Pouring pesticides down drains is illegal and environmentally hazardous.
